Sifu Norm has been studying traditional Kung Fu for over 18 years within the Shaolin Kung Fu system he teaches. His passion and primary focus is on traditional mind and body conditioning, stances, empty hand and weapons forms. He emphasizes the artistry of Kung Fu for the benefits it gives the practitioner, however the heart of even the most beautiful Kung Fu movement is rooted in martial application. Sifu Norm has trained under Sifu Mathers, and Sigung Eric Lee as well as others, but it was Sifu Brandon who taught him from beginner to his current second degree black sash level, and title as Sifu.

Health

All of the movements and techniques are aimed at increasing students’ strength and stamina. As you mature in the practice of this art you will be taught internal sets to bring in the Wei Qi (external power) inwardly to fortify your body. Therefore, emphasis is placed on the traditional methods of physical conditioning as well as mental skills.

martial skill

Students learn how to apply traditional movements in fixed sparring sets and in open sparring using the movements from the traditional forms. The reason that martial skill is the last on this list is because the philosophical values that guide this training places the emphasis on developing greater health and making you a better person. According to the teachings of Shaolin Tien Tao Chuan, Martial Skill is a bi-product of good health and a sound spirit.

self protection

For students interested in developing strong self-defense skills, our classes offer you comprehensive and realistic skill development toward Self Protection. Your initial training will introduce you to the striking range of fighting. You will be taught how to strike and how to counter strikes thrown at you. This type of training will increase your confidence and self-defense skills in the punching and kicking ranges. As you progress you will receive comprehensive training covering Environmental Training. This environment perspective means that your training sessions will include various scenarios and environments that you might find yourself in. You will be introduced to more close-range fighting methods. This includes trapping, joint locks (Chin na), throwing and grappling.

In summary you will learn seven major areas dealing with Self-Protection. These areas include: Prevention, Negotiation, Control, Paralyzation, Breaking, Termination and Evacuation. We believe that the first three areas (Prevention, Negotiation and Control) are critical skills to develop in order to avoid any legal problems associated with defending yourself. In the event that you might need to defend yourself, it is our goal to prepare you for any situation you might encounter.
